ABSTRACT:
The Ganzfeld is a method of perceptual deprivation, involving a reduced patterning of stimulation; participants may experience altered states of consciousness. We look at both phenomenology and electrophysiology (EEG) of our participants immersed in Whole-Body Perceptual Deprivation (WBPD), with two goals to investigate: (1) a shift in state of consciousness and sense of self; (2) the induction of synesthesia. The participants first completed some questionnaires and then a time-production (TP) task. An eyes-closed EEG baseline recording was obtained. The white-illuminated WBPD chamber was then closed, and an eyes-closed recording (WBPD-1) allowed us to test for the immediate effect of WBPD. This was followed by red and indigo light, each presented for 5 minutes, after which a short report of subjective experience was obtained. The participants thus underwent 10 minutes of eyes-open WBPD, with two sounds introduced to facilitate the induction of synesthesia. Then a third eyes-closed EEG (WBPD-2), followed by a short report of subjective experience, and a second TP task were done, followed by an extensive interview. Our participants reported experiences of an unusual character. The differential effect of the colored environments on some of them is quite familiar; a focus on bodily sensations, coupled with a feeling of immersion, is also well known. There are wide individual differences in EEG alpha profile: Male participants should not be pooled with female participants, because their alpha asymmetry profiles are diametrically opposed. There are also wide individual differences in time production: When “time disappeared”, TP becomes haphazard; when “time was slower” or “time was expanded”, TP is lengthened.

One of the biggest challenges for researchers investigating altered states of consciousness (ASCs) has been the need for a
systematic framework to accurately describe the phenomenological characteristics of ASCs, as well as placing them in relation to regular states of consciousness. Here, we target these two challenges by employing a new and systematic model of consciousness, the consciousness state space (CSS), and presenting a typology of ASCs within the CSS model. Specifically, the CSS model describes two different levels of self, narrative and minimal, as concentric spheres along three dimensions - subjective time, awareness, and emotion - and creates a phenomenological state-space encompassing all possible states, with its proposed neural space. We describe several ASCs focusing on dreaming, hallucinogenic effects of drugs, and meditation, in order to demonstrate and draw several conclusions. Here we focus on two related alterations during ASCs pertaining to perception of time and the bodily self: (i) ASCs share a common ‘collapse’ of the time dimension towards a transitory state of ‘timelessness’; (ii) during extreme ASCs, body sensations are ‘cut-off’ or at least distorted.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We use a unique environment of Whole Body Perceptual Deprivation (WBPD) to induce an altered state of consciousness (ASC) in our participants, and employ online EEG recording. We present individual EEG alpha profiles, and show how these data can be analyzed at the individual level. Our goal is to investigate to what degree subjective experience matches EEG alpha profile, and in particular, the various alpha hemispheric asymmetries observed in the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. Specifically, we consider positive (frontal L < R) or negative (frontal L > R) affect; a more verbal (L > R) or a more imagistic (R > L) mode of thinking; and a more trancelike (frontal > parietal) or more reflective (frontal < parietal) state of consciousness. Our results indicate that the individual alpha profiles are reflected in individual differences in subjective experience. However, the alpha profiles are confounded with the gender of the participant. Specifically, there is a predominant R > L asymmetry found for male participants, and a predominant L > R asymmetry found for female participants.

Time perception and the experience of time when immersed in an altered sensory environment

The notion that exposure to a monotonous sensory environment could elicit reports indicating aberrant subjective experience and altered time perception is the impetus for the present report. Research has looked at the influence of exposure to such environments on time perception, reporting that the greater the environmental variation, the shorter is the time estimation obtained by the method of production. Most conditions for creating an altered sensory environment, however, have not facilitated an immersive experience, one that directly impacts both time perception and subjective experience. In this study, we invited our participants to enter a whole-body altered sensory environment for a 20-min session, wherein they were asked to relax without falling asleep. The session included white-colored illumination of the chamber with eyes closed (5 min), followed by 10 min of illuminating the room with color, after which a short report of subjective experience was collected using a brief questionnaire; this was followed by an additional 5 min of immersion in white light with closed eyes. The participants were then interviewed regarding their subjective experience, including their experience of time within the chamber. Prior to entering the chamber, the participants completed a time-production (TP) task. One group of participants then repeated the task within the chamber, at the end of the session; a second group of participants repeated the task after exiting the chamber. We shall report on changes in TP, and present data indicating that when produced time is plotted as a function of target duration, using a log–log plot, the major influence of sensory environment is on the intercept of the psychophysical function. We shall further present data indicating that for those participants reporting a marked change in time experience, such as “the sensation of time disappeared,” their TP data could not be linearized using a log–log plot, hence indicating that for these individuals there might be a “break” in the psychophysical function.

While architecture and arts have recognized the importance of symbols for centuries, current studies in neuroscience have only recently started examining the subject, focusing on the relationship between sensory experience and architectural perception. In the field of phenomenological philosophy, Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1964) has previously suggested a theory postulating the embodiment of the built environment into our daily sensorial experience, emphasizing the close relationship between architectural experience and bodily self-consciousness (Mallgrave, 2011; Pasqualini, Llobera and Blanke, 2013). Nevertheless, the question whether different embodied symbols have specifically defined psychological and neuronal effects remains open.
In order to address this question, we chose to compare the effects of two embodied symbols, the Square and the EGG on phenomenological reports of experience. This was conducted with two contemplative practices representing the opposite sides of the spectrum (i.e., movement and sitting meditation): Quadrato Motor Training (QMT), a whole-body movement mediation (Ben-Soussan, Glicksohn, Goldstein, Berkovich-Ohana, Donchin, 2013; Ben-Soussan, Glicksohn, & Berkovich-Ohana, 2015)., and the EGG (Paoletti, Glicksohn, Berkovich-Ohana, Ben-Soussan, under submission), a spherical sensory deprivation tank), which were conducted within a highly restricted space.
In a recent study, we compared phenomenological reports collected immediately following these two practices. 30 practitioners of breathing meditation novice to these practices performed a session of either QMT or EGG (n = 15, each), followed by a semi-structured interview. The reported experiences were classified into content units. Following factor analysis, experiences were classified into three categories: alteration in the perception of: (1) space-time, (2) bodily sensation and (3) emotion. Significantly more experiences were reported following The EGG in comparison to the QMT group in both space-time and bodily sensation categories. In addition, the EGG group reported more experience related to neutral emotions, as opposed to positive or negative emotions.
The results suggest that the whole-body embodiment of specifically defined symbols, such as the Square and the EGG, can produce distinct phenomenological experiences. The results are in line with the Sphere Model of consciouness (Paoletti, 2011). Their implications for architecture, arts and contemplative neuroscience are discussed in relation to the effects of embodied symbols on perception and higher states of consciousness, emphasizing the importance of the external environment for obtaining a specific inner state.

Time production (TP) with or without chronometric counting both instantiates and reflects the working of an internal clock, as originally posited by Treisman. We exploit the fact that a number of experienced meditators, who had previously participated in a study wherein TP was assessed, and who had employed chronometric counting then, would be coming back to the lab to participate in a second study. We specifically requested that they should not employ chronometric counting this time, thus allowing us to contrast TP with and without counting. We report a qualitative difference between TP implemented by counting and TP without counting: The first is a linear function of target duration (T), while the second is not, and entails a discontinuity in the function. Requesting meditators not to engage in chronometric counting, and thereby forcing them to rely instead on other cues (sensory, bodily, etc.), might well be an appropriate context in which to observe such a discontinuity in TP.

Absorption, the ability to highly focus attention, as well as openness to self-altering experiences, is an important psychological construct, closely related to deep-meditation states and other altered states of consciousness. Yet, little is known about the electrophysiological profile of states of absorption, possibly due to the difficulty to induce this state in the lab. While most studies have used a visual Ganzfeld (homogeneous perceptual field), here we use a novel technique of full immersion-the OVO Whole-Body Perceptual Deprivation (OVO-WBPD) chamber, which is an altered sensory environment in the form of a human-sized egg. Consequently, the aims of the current study were to investigate whether the OVO-WBPD chamber induces state absorption, using first-person reports, as well as to examine electrophysiological change following immersion in this altered sensory environment. Fourteen participants volunteered to participate in the study. Trait absorption was measured using the Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS). State absorption was assessed by analyzing the content of the subjective reports, using sub-categories of the absorption construct (e.g., synesthesia). EEG was measured before and during a 20-min OVO-WBPD experience. Using exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA), we analyzed change in oscillatory EEG activity and localized the generators of the scalp EEG power spectra following the OVO-WBPD. Our results show that OVO-WBPD immersion leads to a state of absorption in all participants. We also report significant increased oscillatory activity in the delta and beta bands, in the left inferior frontal cortex, with a peak in the sub-lobar of the left insula. In addition, a positive correlation was found between change in delta activity and trait absorption. The results are discussed in light of other meditative practices and altered states of consciousness.
